Ernest "Pot" Graves (born March 27, 1880 – died June 9, 1953) was an important American figure. He was a talented player and coach in both American football and baseball. He also had a long and successful career as an officer in the United States Army. Graves eventually reached the high rank of brigadier general.

Ernest Graves' Early Life and Education

Ernest Graves was born and grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He later attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. This is a famous school for training Army officers. He graduated from West Point in 1905, finishing second in his class. This showed he was a very smart and dedicated student.

Military Career and Achievements

After graduating, Graves began his career in the Army. He first served with the 3rd Engineers at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Later, he was stationed in the Philippines from 1909 to 1910.

Service in Mexico and World War I

Graves also served in Mexico with General John J. Pershing. He led an engineering company that built important roads. These roads helped the Army get supplies where they needed to go. He then joined General Pershing again in France during World War I. During the war, he was put in charge of a large section of the Army's supply operations. His job was to build many warehouses to store supplies for the soldiers in France.

Distinguished Service Medal

For his excellent work during World War I, Ernest Graves received a special award. It was the Army Distinguished Service Medal. This medal is given for outstanding service to the United States government. The award recognized his great leadership and hard work. He was praised for building the Grieves Storage Depot. He also managed all construction projects in a key area. His performance was described as "exceptionally meritorious."

Retirement from the Army

In 1921, Graves had to retire from the Army. This was because he became deaf.

Family Life and Passing

After leaving the military, Ernest Graves married Lucie Gunn Birnie in 1923. His son, Ernest Graves Jr., also followed in his footsteps. He became a lieutenant general in the Army. Ernest Graves passed away at the age of 73. He died on June 9, 1953, at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C..

Ernest Graves was also a football and baseball coach. He was the head football coach for the Army Cadets in 1906 and again in 1912. He also coached the line for Harvard in 1908.
