Earnest Lee Hudson (born December 17, 1945) is a famous American actor. He is best known for playing Winston Zeddemore in the popular Ghostbusters movies.
Ernie Hudson has been in many other films. These include The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992), The Crow (1994), and Miss Congeniality (2000). On TV, he played Warden Leo Glynn in the show Oz from 1997 to 2003. He has also appeared in shows like Desperate Housewives, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and Quantum Leap.

Ernie Hudson's Early Life
Ernie Hudson was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan. He had a tough start. His mother passed away when he was only two months old. His grandmother, Arrana Donald, then raised him.
After high school, Ernie joined the United States Marine Corps. But he had to leave after three months because of asthma. He then moved to Detroit. There, he became a writer for Concept East, which was the oldest Black theater company in the U.S.
He went to Wayne State University to improve his writing and acting. He graduated in 1973. He also started his own theater group called the Actors' Ensemble Theatre. Here, he and other young Black writers put on their own plays. Ernie also studied at the University of Minnesota and Yale School of Drama. He left these programs early to act in plays and movies.
Ernie Hudson has shared that he is a Christian. He believes in his faith but thinks that no single church is the only "right" one.
Ernie Hudson's Acting Career
One of Ernie Hudson's first movie roles was in Penitentiary II (1982). He also had guest roles in TV shows like The Dukes of Hazzard and The A-Team. He became famous for playing Winston Zeddemore in the 1984 movie Ghostbusters. He also returned for the sequel, Ghostbusters II in 1989.
He played a kind handyman named Solomon in The Hand that Rocks the Cradle (1992). Ernie also starred as Warden Leo Glynn in the HBO series Oz. His son, Ernie Hudson Jr., also acted in the show with him. Other notable roles include Munro in Congo (1995) and Sergeant Albrecht in The Crow (1994).
Ernie Hudson also played Harry McDonald, an FBI boss, in Miss Congeniality (2000). In 2006, he was in the TV movie The Ron Clark Story as Principal Turner. From 2008, he had a regular role as Dr. Fields in The Secret Life of the American Teenager. He also appeared in Law & Order and voiced Agent Bill Fowler in Transformers: Prime.

From 2015, Ernie Hudson played Jacob in the series Grace and Frankie. Jacob was a love interest for Frankie Bergstein, played by Lily Tomlin. He also appeared in the 2016 reboot as Bill Jenkins. Bill was the uncle of Leslie Jones' character.
In 2019, Ernie Hudson starred in L.A.'s Finest. He played the father of Gabrielle Union's character. He said this show was "very different" because his character was a police officer with family problems.
He returned as Winston Zeddemore in Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021). He was very emotional to put on his Ghostbusters uniform again. In 2022, he joined the cast of the new Quantum Leap TV series. He plays Herbert "Magic" Williams. In 2023, he voiced a character named Grini Millegi in Star Wars: The Bad Batch. He also appeared in the movies Prisoner's Daughter (2022) and Champions (2023). He returned for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire in 2024.
Ernie Hudson's Personal Life
Ernie Hudson married his first wife, Jeannie Moore, in 1963. They had two sons, Ernie Hudson Jr. and Rahaman. After they divorced in 1976, his sons moved to live with him in California. In 1985, Ernie married Linda Kingsberg. They have two sons named Andrew and Ross.
In June 2024, a street near his childhood home in Benton Harbor, Michigan, was named "Ernie Hudson Way" to honor him.
Awards and Recognition
Ernie Hudson has been recognized for his acting. In 2024, he won an award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Drama Series at the Astra TV Awards for his role in Quantum Leap.
