Errázuriz Family facts for kids
The Errázuriz family is a very important and influential family in the history of Chile. It all started with Francisco Javier Errázuriz Larraín, who was born in a town called Aranaz in Navarra, Spain. He traveled a long way to Chile in 1735. Many of his family members became famous, including four presidents of Chile and several important leaders in the Catholic Church.
Coming to Chile
Francisco Javier Errázuriz Larraín began his journey in 1733, arriving first in Lima, Peru. Two years later, in 1735, he moved to Chile. His uncle, Santiago Larraín, was already living there and was a successful merchant. Santiago helped his nephew settle in. Soon, Francisco Javier Errázuriz became a well-known person in the society of Santiago, the capital city of Chile.
His Children and Family Legacy
Francisco Javier Errázuriz Larraín had ten children with his wife, María del Loreto Madariaga y Pardo de Figueroa. Only one of his sons, Francisco Javier de Errázuriz Madariaga, had children who continued the family name.
- Francisco Javier de Errázuriz Madariaga was born on April 23, 1744. He married Rosa Martinez y Aldunate Guerrero. They had 14 children, and 12 of them grew up to be adults. This branch of the family is the one that continued the Errázuriz line.
- José Antonio de Errázuriz Madariaga was born on September 14, 1747. He became a priest.
- Domingo de Errázuriz Madariaga was born in 1754 and also became a priest.
- Rosa de Errázuriz Madariaga was born in 1756 and became a nun.
The Errázuriz family became very important in Chilean politics. Four of Francisco Javier Errázuriz Larraín's descendants became presidents of Chile:
- Fernando Errázuriz Aldunate, who was president in 1831.
- Federico Errázuriz Zañartu, who served as president from 1871 to 1876.
- Federico Errázuriz Echaurren, who was president from 1896 to 1901.
- Germán Riesco Errázuriz, who was president from 1901 to 1906.
