Eskandar Firouz (born August 7, 1926 – died March 4, 2020) was an important Iranian environmentalist and politician. He is known as the person who started environmental protection and conservation efforts in Iran. He was the very first director of Iran's Department of Environment.

Who Was Eskandar Firouz?
Eskandar Firouz was born in 1926 in a city called Shiraz, in Iran. His father, Mohammad Hossein Mirza Firouz, was a prince from the Qajar dynasty, a royal family that once ruled Iran. His grandfather was Abdol-Hossein Farman Farma.
His Education
Eskandar Firouz went to school outside of Iran. He studied in Germany first. Later, he attended the Lawrenceville Preparatory School and then Yale University in the United States. These schools helped him learn a lot and prepare for his future work.
Protecting Iran's Nature
Eskandar Firouz was a strong supporter of protecting nature. In 1971, he played a key role in creating Iran's Department of Environment (DOE). This new department was made to look after Iran's natural places and wildlife.
Key Achievements in Conservation
As the head of the Department of Environment, Firouz helped Iran create and pass the Environmental Protection Law. This law is still used today to protect Iran's environment. He also helped set up many national parks, nature reserves, and protected areas across Iran. These places help keep animals and plants safe.
International Recognition
Firouz's work was noticed around the world. In 1972, he was chosen to be a vice-president at a big meeting called the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. This meeting was held in Stockholm, Sweden. From 1973 to 1975, he was also part of the leadership team for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In 1977, he was even elected as the President of the IUCN. However, he could not take this position because of political changes in Iran at the time.
The Ramsar Convention
Eskandar Firouz was one of the three main people who started the "Ramsar Convention". This is an important international agreement focused on protecting wetlands around the world. Wetlands are special areas like marshes and swamps that are very important for many types of birds and other wildlife.
His Family Life
Eskandar Firouz married Iran Ala. Her father, Hossein Ala', was a former prime minister of Iran. Eskandar and Iran had two daughters, named Anahita and Azar. Eskandar Firouz passed away on March 4, 2020, when he was 93 years old.
