Eskender Ametovich Mustafaiev, born on July 17, 1981, is a talented paralympic swimmer. He has competed in major international events.
He first represented Ukraine at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. There, he won a gold medal in the 50 metre freestyle S4 event. He also earned two gold and two silver medals at the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships. Later, Mustafaiev competed for Russia at the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships, where he won a gold and a bronze medal.
About Eskender Mustafaiev
Eskender Mustafaiev was born in Chinaz, a town in the Tashkent Region of the Soviet Union. He grew up in Aqyar/Sevastopil, Ukraine. When he was five years old, he was diagnosed with a condition called Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease. This is a group of inherited disorders that affect the nerves. It can cause muscle weakness and loss of feeling, especially in the arms and legs.
Eskender is married to Yulia, and they have a daughter together. He was previously married to Olga Mustafaieva, who is also a Ukrainian Paralympic athlete. Eskender speaks Russian.
His Swimming Journey
Eskender started swimming in 2008 in Sevastopol, Ukraine. He began swimming to help with a weak back and hand. He briefly tried fencing, but swimming was a better fit because of the issues with his hand.
In 2011, Eskender joined the Ukrainian national team. He competed at the 2011 IPC European Swimming Championships in Berlin, Germany. This was his first big international competition. He swam in the Men's 50m Freestyle S4 event. The "S4" classification is for swimmers with certain physical impairments.
Big Competitions and Medals
At the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, Eskender was one of three athletes from the Crimea region representing Ukraine. He was 31 years old at the time. He won a gold medal in the 50 metre freestyle S4 event. His winning time was 38.26 seconds.
Eskender also competed in other races in London. These included the 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke, and 200m freestyle. He finished eighth in the 50m backstroke final. After the 2012 Games, he received the Order of Merit award for his amazing achievements in sports.
In 2013, Eskender went to Montreal for the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships. He won another gold medal in the men's 50 freestyle S4. His time was 37.96 seconds. He also won a silver medal in the men's 100 freestyle S4. He was very close to winning gold, losing by less than half a second.
In October 2014, Eskender changed which country he represented in competitions. He began to represent Russia in international events. Because of this change, he missed the 2014 IPC Swimming European Championships. This meant he could not defend his world championship title from the previous year.
In 2015, Eskender represented Russia at the IPC World Championships. He won a bronze medal in the 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay 20 Points event. He also competed in the 100m Freestyle S4 and 50m Backstroke S4 events, but did not make it past the first rounds.
