Esperance is a small community in Snohomish County, Washington, in the United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that looks like a town but isn't officially governed by its own city leaders.
Esperance is almost completely surrounded by the city of Edmonds, Washington. Think of it like an island of land that belongs to the county, but is inside another city! In 2020, about 4,007 people lived there. This was a bit more than the 3,601 people who lived there in 2010.

History of Esperance
Should Esperance Join Edmonds?
For the past 50 years, the nearby city of Edmonds has tried to make Esperance officially part of its city five times. Each time, the people living in Esperance have voted no to joining Edmonds.
There are good reasons for both sides of this discussion.
Why Join Edmonds?
Some people think Esperance should join Edmonds because:
- It would make the city of Edmonds one continuous area, without a "hole" in the middle.
- It might make services like trash collection or police help easier to manage.
Why Stay Separate?
However, many people in Esperance want to stay separate from Edmonds. Their reasons include:
- They want to remain part of Snohomish County's "unincorporated area." This means they are governed by the county, not a city.
- They worry that their taxes might go up if they become part of Edmonds.
- They might have more freedom to do certain things in the county that city rules wouldn't allow. For example, there might be fewer rules about building certain structures or keeping animals.
