Espino is a special area called a barrio in the town of San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico. Think of a barrio like a neighborhood or a district within a bigger town. In 2010, about 3,430 people lived in Espino. It's a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, which is a commonwealth of the United States.
A Look Back in Time
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After a war between Spain and the United States, called the Spanish–American War, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States in 1898. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Soon after, in 1899, the United States government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,522 people lived in Espino barrio at that time. Over the years, the number of people living in Espino has grown.
