Estevan Group facts for kids
The Estevan Group, once called the Estevan Islands, is a small group of islands. You can find them in the Hecate Strait area, off the North Coast of British Columbia, Canada. These islands are west of Campania Island. Estevan Sound separates the Estevan Group from Campania Island.
Campania Island is west of Gil Island, with Squally Channel between them. To the southeast of the Estevan Group is Caamaño Sound. Beyond that is Aristazabal Island. To the east of all these islands is Princess Royal Island, which is the second largest island on the British Columbia Coast. To the northwest of the Estevan Group is Banks Island.
Islands of the Estevan Group
The Estevan Group has five main islands. Each one is named after a special person. These people were Lieutenant-Governors of British Columbia. A Lieutenant-Governor is a person who represents the King or Queen in a Canadian province.
The five largest islands are:
- Trutch Island, named after Joseph Trutch
- Barnard Island, named after Francis Stillman Barnard
- Dewdney Island, named after Edgar Dewdney
- Prior Island, named after Edward Gawler Prior
- Lotbinière Island, named after Henri-Gustave Joly de Lotbinière
Another island in the group is Tennant Island. It is located in Langley Passage. This passage goes through the middle of the island group, next to Trutch Island. Tennant Island is a provincial nature conservancy. This means it is a protected area for nature. Near Tennant Island, on Barnard Island, there is a small airport at Ethelda Bay.
