A Look Back at Etna's History
Etna got its name from the famous Mount Etna in Italy. It was first known as "Crosbytown." This name came from its first owner, General John Crosby. He was from a nearby town called Hampden.
Etna officially became a town in 1820. Around 1850, about 802 people lived there.
Camp Etna: A Special Summer Place
Camp Etna is a summer community where people interested in Spiritualism have met every year since 1876. Spiritualism is a belief system where people think they can communicate with spirits.
The first meeting at Camp Etna was held in a tent by Daniel Buswell, Jr. Later, a large temple was built that could seat 1,100 people. They also built a clubhouse and 78 cottages. A monument marks the grave of Mrs. Mary Scannell Pepper Vanderbilt, who was an important leader and helped fund the camp.
