The green-striped white (scientific name: Euchloe belemia) is a type of butterfly. It belongs to the Pieridae family, which includes many white and yellow butterflies.

This butterfly lives in several places around the world. You can find it in northern Africa, parts of Arabia like Oman and the United Arab Emirates, and in southern Europe, especially Spain and Portugal.

What Does It Look Like?

The green-striped white butterfly is not very big. Its wingspan (the distance from one wingtip to the other) is usually between 36 and 44 millimeters. That's about 1.4 to 1.7 inches.

Adult butterflies can be seen flying from February to June. This means they are active during spring and early summer.

What Do They Eat?

The young butterflies, called larvae or caterpillars, need to eat a lot to grow. They feed on different kinds of plants. Some of their favorite plants include Sisymbrium species, like Sisymbrium bourgeanum.

They also enjoy eating Diplotaxis tennuisiliqua and Biscutella didyma. These plants provide the energy and nutrients the caterpillars need to change into butterflies.

Different Kinds of Green-Striped Whites

Just like people can have different features depending on where they live, butterflies can also have different types. These are called subspecies. Here are some of the known subspecies of the green-striped white butterfly:

  • Euchloe belemia hesperidum (identified by Rothschild in 1913)
  • Euchloe belemia eversi (identified by Eversi in 1963)
  • Euchloe belemia abyssinica (identified by Stamm in 1928) - This one is found in Ethiopia and Somalia.
  • Euchloe belemia belemia (identified by Esper in 1800) - This type is found in Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
  • Euchloe belemia palaestinensis (identified by Rüber in 1907)
