Eusébio Oscar Scheid S.C.J. (born December 8, 1932 – died January 13, 2021) was an important leader in the Catholic Church in Brazil. He served as the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro from 2001 to 2009. In 2003, he was given the high rank of cardinal. Before this, he was the Bishop of São José dos Campos (1981–1991) and the Archbishop of Florianópolis (1991–2001).

Early Life and Church Career
Eusébio Oscar Scheid was born in Bom Retiro, Brazil. His parents were Alberto Reinaldo Scheid and Rosália Joana Scheid. He studied at the seminary of the Priests of the Sacred Heart, also known as the Dehonian Fathers. He earned a special degree called a doctorate of Sacred Theology in a field called Christology, which is the study of Jesus Christ.
On July 3, 1960, he became a priest in Rome. After his ordination, he taught important subjects like dogmatic theology (the study of religious beliefs) and liturgy (the way religious services are performed) in Brazil.
Becoming a Bishop and Archbishop
On February 11, 1981, Pope John Paul II chose him to be the Bishop of São José dos Campos. He officially became a bishop on May 1, 1981.
After ten years, on January 23, 1991, he was appointed the Archbishop of Florianópolis. He served there until July 25, 2001, when he was named the Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. He also became the leader for Eastern-Rite Catholics living in Brazil. He officially started his role in Rio de Janeiro on September 22, 2001.
Cardinal and Later Life
Pope John Paul II made Archbishop Scheid a cardinal on October 21, 2003. This is a very high position in the Catholic Church. He was given the title of Cardinal-Priest of Santi Bonifacio e Alessio.
Cardinal Scheid retired from his role as Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro in 2009.
After dealing with health issues related to his age for several months, Cardinal Scheid passed away on January 13, 2021, in São José dos Campos. He had tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to the hospital shortly before his death.
