Eusebio's Playing Career
Playing for Clubs
Eusebio was born in La Seca, a town in Spain. He began his professional football journey with Real Valladolid. He quickly became a key player for them.
In 1987, he moved to Atlético Madrid for one season. After that, he joined FC Barcelona in 1988. He became one of the most important players for coach Johan Cruyff. Eusebio played in many big matches, including the winning Cup Winners' Cup final in 1989 and the 1992 European Cup final (now known as the Champions League).
Eusebio later played for RC Celta de Vigo from 1995 to 1997. He finished his career back at Real Valladolid in 2002, retiring at 38 years old. He played 543 matches in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league. This makes him one of the players with the most appearances in La Liga history.
Playing for Spain
Eusebio played 15 times for the Spanish national team. His first game was in 1986 against Greece. He was chosen to play in UEFA Euro 1988, a big European tournament. However, he did not play in any matches during that tournament.
Eusebio's Coaching Career
After he stopped playing football, Eusebio opened a football school for young children in Valladolid. He also got his coaching license.
From 2003 to 2008, he worked as an assistant coach at Barcelona under Frank Rijkaard.
Managing Celta and Barcelona B
In 2009, Eusebio became the head coach of Celta, another team he used to play for. The team was struggling in the Segunda División (Spain's second division). He helped them stay in the league, but he left in 2010 when his contract ended.
Eusebio returned to Barcelona in 2011 to manage their reserve team, Barcelona B. He led them to a strong third-place finish in the league in his third year. However, after some difficult results, he was replaced in February 2015.
Managing Real Sociedad and Girona
On 9 November 2015, Eusebio was named the manager of Real Sociedad, a top-flight team. He managed them until March 2018.
In June 2018, he took over as manager of Girona FC. He left the club in May 2019 after the team was relegated from the top league.
Personal Life
In late 2020, Eusebio had a serious head injury after a fall in Valladolid. He was put into an induced coma to help him recover.
