Helen Charlotte Eliza "Evelyn" Johnson (born September 22, 1856 – died June 12, 1937) was a talented First Nations poet. She was the sister of the famous poet E. Pauline Johnson. Evelyn was known for her own writing and for helping to preserve her family's history and Indigenous culture.

Early Life and Education

Evelyn Johnson was the daughter of Chief George Henry Martin Johnson and Emily Susanna Howells. Her father was a respected leader. Evelyn grew up learning about her rich heritage. She attended Hellmuth Ladies' College in London, Ontario. This school helped her develop her skills and knowledge.

Life and Work

Evelyn worked at the Waterous Engine Works for many years. After her mother passed away in 1898, she moved to the United States. There, she took on different roles. She worked at the YWCA in Troy, New York. She also helped at a special home in White Plains. Later, she was a companion for a senator's mother in New Jersey. She also worked at the Sheltering Arms Home in Philadelphia.

Family and Legacy

In 1912, Evelyn traveled to Vancouver to be with her sister, Pauline. Pauline was very ill at the time. After Pauline's passing in March 1913, Evelyn stayed in Vancouver for several months. She then worked in New York City before returning to her hometown of Brantford.

Evelyn was very proud of her Indigenous heritage. She worked hard to create a monument in Canada for Tecumseh. He was a famous Shawnee warrior and leader. She also made sure that money raised for monuments was used correctly.

During World War I, Evelyn helped with fundraising efforts. She donated money to help buy a machine gun for the Vancouver 29th Battalion. This was part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The machine gun was even inscribed with "Tekahionwake," which was Pauline Johnson's Indigenous name.

Evelyn cared deeply about her family's history. She gave many items that belonged to her sister to the Brantford Historical Society. She also donated her family's large collection to the Royal Ontario Museum. This helped to preserve important parts of their history for future generations.

Later Years

Evelyn Johnson passed away in Brantford at the age of 80. She was laid to rest at the Mohawk Chapel. Her life showed her dedication to her family, her culture, and her country.
