Evergreen's Past: A Look at Its History

Evergreen was once part of a large land grant called Rancho Yerba Buena. This land was given to Antonio Chaboya during the Mexican era. His family, the Chaboyas, were very important in helping the area grow.
You can still see their influence today. Places like Chaboya Middle School, Chaboya Park, and Chaboya Road are named after them. There's even a neighborhood called Chaboya within Evergreen.
In 1911, a brave inventor named John J. Montgomery did some amazing gliding experiments here. He was a pioneer in early flight. To honor him, the community has named John J. Montgomery Elementary School and Montgomery Park after him.
Montgomery's last glider was named "The Evergreen." It was restored by the Smithsonian Institution. Today, you can see it on display at the San Diego Air and Space Museum in San Diego, California.

Montgomery Hill: A Historic Aviation Site
On September 12, 1966, Montgomery Hill was recognized as a California historical landmark. It was given the number 813. This hill is very important for the history of flight.
A special plaque at the site explains its significance. It says that about three-quarters of a mile northeast is Montgomery Hill. This is where John Joseph Montgomery made 55 successful flights with his "aeroplane."
These flights showed off new ideas in how planes work, which are still used in modern aircraft today. Montgomery used his engineering skills and discoveries about how air affects flight. He created a flying machine that had full control. It had curved wings, a rear stabilizer, flexible wingtips, and wing-warping ailerons.
