Exeter is a small village in Fillmore County, Nebraska, United States. It is home to about 516 people, according to the 2020 census. Exeter is known for its friendly community and its history connected to the early railroads in Nebraska.

History of Exeter

Exeter began in 1870 when Dr. Horace Greeley Smith and his wife claimed land there. Dr. Smith believed the new Burlington and Missouri River Railroad would pass through this spot. He was right!

In 1871, the railroad was finished through Fillmore County. The railroad helped create towns along its path to encourage people to settle. These towns were named in alphabetical order as the railroad moved west from Lincoln.

Exeter was named after Exeter, New Hampshire. One of the first families in the area came from there. The name fit the alphabetical pattern of the railroad towns: Crete, Dorchester, Exeter, Fairmont, Grafton, Harvard, Inland, Juniata, Kenesaw, and Lowell.

The railroad offered free government land in Nebraska. This brought many new settlers from the eastern United States. Immigrants from places like Czech Republic, Germany, England, Ireland, and Scandinavia also came.

At first, Exeter grew slowly. But by the late 1870s, it started to grow faster. In 1878, two large buildings for storing grain were built. Many new businesses also opened. The town's first newspaper, the Enterprise, started that same year. Exeter officially became a town in 1879, with sixteen businesses.
