About Exeter

Where is Exeter?

Exeter is a city located in Barry County, Missouri. It covers a total area of about 2.05 square kilometers (0.79 square miles). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large bodies of water within the city limits.

Exeter's Past

Exeter was officially started in 1880. It was named after a city called Exeter in Devon, England.

The Shortest Railway

A railway line called the Frisco line used to run through the Ozarks, including Exeter. This line brought tourists to places like Mineral Springs. In 1896, a very short railway was built. It connected Exeter and Cassville. This railway was only 4.8 miles long one way. It was super important during harsh winters when many roads were blocked.

This short railway was called "The Cassville and Western Railroad." Because Exeter is the highest point in the county, the train could use gravity to roll downhill to Cassville. To get back uphill to Exeter, it needed steam power.

Downtown Exeter

During its busiest time, Exeter had a hotel called The Palace. There was also a flour mill. Sadly, a huge fire destroyed the downtown area on October 21, 1927. The railway eventually stopped running in 1956. In the 1950s, Exeter had a Farmer's Exchange (a market) and a post office. The post office has been open since 1880.

Famous People and Sports

Some notable people were born in Exeter. These include Ed Hawk, a Major League baseball player. Another famous person is Mason Lowe, a professional bull rider.

Exeter High School has a proud sports history. The boys' basketball team won the state championship in 1963. The girls' basketball team won the state championship in 2009. They also finished second in the state in 2011. In the 2023-2024 spring season, the Exeter High School baseball team won their district for the first time ever.
