Fair Plain (sometimes spelled "Fairplain") is a small community in Berrien County, Michigan, in the United States. It is called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own city government.
For counting people and statistics, it's known as a census-designated place (CDP). In 2020, about 7,402 people lived there.

Fair Plain's History
The community got its name because the original area was very pretty. It had a "fair plain" or beautiful flat land.
Early Shopping Center
In 1958, Fairplain Plaza opened. It was the first big shopping center in this area. It was located on M-139, on the eastern side of Fair Plain.
Most of the original Fairplain Plaza was taken down in the late 1990s. But don't worry, it was rebuilt and made bigger. New building styles were used for the updated plaza.
Becoming a City
In 1975, there was an idea to make Fair Plain an official city. However, this plan did not happen, and Fair Plain remained an unincorporated community.
Fair Plain's Geography
Fair Plain is located in southwestern Michigan. It covers a total area of about 11.5 square kilometers (4.4 square miles). Most of this area, about 10.9 square kilometers (4.2 square miles), is land.
The rest, about 0.6 square kilometers (0.2 square miles), is water. This means about 5.22% of Fair Plain's area is water.
Location and Boundaries
Fair Plain is part of two larger areas: St. Joseph Charter Township and Benton Charter Township. The part in St. Joseph Charter Township is northeast of the St. Joseph River.
Fair Plain has clear boundaries. To the north, it borders the city of Benton Harbor. The St. Joseph River forms its western and southern borders. To the east, its boundary is the M-139 highway.

In the year 2000, about 7,828 people lived in Fair Plain. There were 3,287 households, which are groups of people living in one home. Out of these, 2,116 were families.
