History of Fairmont

Early Settlement and Railroads

The area around Fairmont, known as Patterson Township, began to be settled in 1893. This happened right after the Cherokee Outlet land was opened up for people to live on.

In 1902, the Denver, Enid and Gulf Railroad built a train line through this area. A company called the Enid Right of Way and Townsite Company officially planned out the town of Fairmont on October 18, 1902. A post office was set up in December of that same year. Before this, people in the area got their mail from the Luella post office.

Another railroad, the Arkansas Valley and Western Railway, built a branch line from Tulsa. This line went through towns like Perry and Covington, ending near Steen (which is northeast of Enid) between 1902 and 1903. Both of these important railroads crossed paths in Fairmont. This made Fairmont a busy center for farming services. Four large buildings called grain elevators were built there to store crops.

Farming and Oil

Since it was founded, farming has been the main way people in Fairmont make a living. The most important crop grown in the area is wheat.

Oil also became a big part of the town's economy after it was found in Garfield County in 1916. An oil refinery, which processes crude oil, was built close to Fairmont. The Champlin Refining Company bought this refinery in 1925.
