Fairview is a small, unincorporated community located in Coos County, Oregon, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but no official local government. Fairview sits right along the North Fork Coquille River, about 6 miles (or 10 kilometers) northeast of a town called Coquille.
The Story of Fairview
Fairview got its name because of the beautiful views in the area. It's a very descriptive name! Long ago, a special logging railroad helped connect Fairview to the main Southern Pacific rail network. This connection was made at a spot called Fairview Junction, which was close to Coquille.
Post Office History
A post office first opened in Fairview in 1873. The very first postmaster, or person in charge of the post office, was Francis Braden.
Interestingly, having a post office named Fairview in Coos County caused a bit of a mix-up. There was another place also called Fairview in Multnomah County, Oregon. To avoid confusion, the post office at the railway station in Multnomah County was temporarily named Cleone.
The post office in Coos County closed its doors in 1913. After that, in 1914, the Cleone post office in Multnomah County was finally able to change its name to Fairview.
