History of Fairview
Long ago, the Multnomah tribe of Chinookan Indians lived in a village near the Columbia River. This was close to where Fairview is today. The famous explorers Lewis and Clark visited this area in 1806.
In the 1840s and 1850s, settlers from other places started farms here. They grew hay and grain and raised animals. By the 1890s, railroad tracks reached the area, helping it grow.
People believe the name "Fairview" came from the beautiful views of the Columbia River, the Columbia River Gorge, and Mount Hood. Another idea is that it was a good spot to watch for approaching groups. At first, the post office was called Cleone because another town named Fairview already existed. Later, the name was changed to Fairview.
In the mid-1980s, the city tried to grow much larger by adding nearby areas. This would have made it the second-biggest city in Oregon at the time. However, the plan did not work out because of state laws.
A big company in Fairview is Townsend Farms. They freeze berries and employ many people, especially during harvest season. In 2020, they had about 350 regular employees and 450 seasonal workers.
On August 31, 2024, a small plane crashed in Fairview. It hit power lines and some homes. Sadly, three people died in the accident. The crash caused power outages in the area. The plane was on a test flight from a nearby airport.
