How Hemp Helped Fairwater Grow
Fairwater really thrived during World War I. This was because of a plant called hemp. Hemp was very important for making strong ropes needed for the war. Farmers in Fairwater grew hemp, and factory workers processed it. The Fairwater Hemp Company was a big part of the local economy.
The factory was also very eco-friendly for its time. It used parts of the hemp plant that weren't needed for rope to fuel its steam power system. This meant less waste! However, the Fairwater Hemp Company closed down in 1931.
