Fairy is a small, quiet place in Hamilton County, Texas, in the Central Texas area of the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

History of Fairy

How Fairy Got Its Name

Fairy wasn't always called Fairy! It was first known as Martin's Gap. This name came from an early settler named James Martin. He used an oxcart to travel through a mountain gap in the area.

The name changed to Fairy in 1884. This happened when a post office was opened there. The community was named after a girl called Fairy Fort. She was the daughter of Captain Battle Fort, who was a soldier in the Confederate Army.

Life in Early Fairy

For many years, Fairy was a busy place for farmers and ranchers. From 1900 to about 1936, it had a cotton gin. This was a machine that separated cotton fibers from their seeds.

The community also had schools, churches, and other businesses. These places helped serve the people who lived and worked in the surrounding farming and ranching areas.

Changes Over Time

In 1947, Fairy had a post office, three churches, and three businesses. About 150 people lived there at that time.

However, like many small communities, Fairy saw some changes. The post office closed in 1957. Later, in 1967, the Fairy school district joined with the Hamilton schools.

The population of Fairy has stayed small. In 1980, 1990, and 2000, there were 31 people. By 2019, the population went up a little to 40 people.
