Central Texas is a special part of the U.S. state of Texas. It's located right in the middle of the state. Imagine drawing lines from San Saba in the west to Bryan in the southeast, and from San Marcos in the south to Hillsboro in the north. That's roughly where Central Texas is!
This area includes some beautiful places like the Texas Hill Country. It's also part of a larger land area called the Edwards Plateau. Central Texas is known for its growing cities and important military bases.

Major Cities and Areas in Central Texas
Central Texas is home to several large and important cities. These cities form busy areas called "metropolitan areas."
- The Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood area is a big part of Central Texas.
- The Bryan–College Station area is another key region.
- You'll also find the Waco metropolitan area.
- And the Austin–Round Rock area, which is also part of the state's Capital region.
The Austin–Round Rock and Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood areas are growing super fast! They are among the quickest-growing metropolitan areas in all of Texas.
In the southern part of Central Texas, the Greater Austin area and the Greater San Antonio area are about 80 miles apart. Experts think these two big areas might eventually grow together. They could form a huge "metroplex," much like Dallas and Fort Worth have done.
Some of the biggest cities in Central Texas include:
- Austin (the state capital!)
- College Station
- Killeen
- Round Rock
- Waco
Near Killeen, you'll find Fort Cavazos (which used to be called Fort Hood). This is the largest U.S. Army base in the entire country!
