Falkville is a small town in Morgan County, Alabama. It is part of the larger Decatur Metropolitan Area. In 2020, about 1,197 people lived there.

Falkville became an official town three times. First, it was in 1876. Then again on June 19, 1886. Finally, it became official on December 13, 1898.

Falkville's Early History

Falkville got its name from Louis M. Falk. He was a merchant from Prussia, a country in Europe that no longer exists. Louis Falk moved to the area in the late 1850s.

In 1859, he opened a general store in what is now Falkville. He also became the town's first postmaster. The L&N Railroad was built through Falkville in the early 1870s. A train station opened there in 1872.

In 1936, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) built a town hall for Falkville. The WPA was a U.S. government program that created jobs during the Great Depression. This building is now the town's library.

Tornadoes in the 1950s

Falkville was hit by two strong tornadoes in the 1950s. On April 24, 1955, a very powerful F4 tornado went right through the town. It caused five deaths and injured 20 people.

Two years later, on April 8, 1957, another strong F3 tornado struck. This storm hit the southern part of town. It caused two deaths and injured 90 people.

Where is Falkville Located?

Falkville is in the southern part of Morgan County. It is located at 34°22′19″N 86°54′30″W / 34.37194°N 86.90833°W / 34.37194; -86.90833. The town is mainly along U.S. Route 31. This road is about 5 miles (8 km) south of Hartselle.

Interstate 65 runs along the eastern side of Falkville. You can get to the town from Exit 322. Decatur, the main city in Morgan County, is about 18 miles (29 km) north. Huntsville is about 40 miles (64 km) to the northeast. Cullman is about 14 miles (23 km) to the south.

The town of Falkville covers about 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2) of land. Only a tiny part, about 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2), is water. Robinson Creek and Painter Branch flow through the town. These creeks eventually flow into Flint Creek, which then flows into the Tennessee River.
