History of Fanshawe
Fanshawe got its start as a town on March 31, 1891. Back then, this area was known as Indian Territory. A post office was opened, which helped the town grow.
The town was named after a person named John R. Fanshawe. He worked for the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad. This railroad built tracks through the area between 1889 and 1890. Interestingly, the people living in the town didn't get to choose its name. Instead, railroad leaders and investors went on a trip to inspect the new railway line. At each new station they had built, they would draw a name from a hat. Whatever name was picked, that's what the new town was called!
When Fanshawe was first founded, it was part of the Moshulatubbee District of the Choctaw Nation. The Choctaw Nation is a Native American tribe.
