Fares Fares, born on April 29, 1973, is an actor, producer, and director. He is famous for working with director Tarik Saleh. You might also know him from TV shows like Chernobyl and The Wheel of Time. Fares has won several awards, including a Guldbagge Award for Best Actor. He also won two Robert Awards for Best Supporting Actor.

Early Life and Moving to Sweden

Fares was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on April 29, 1973. His family is of Assyrian background. His younger brother, Josef Fares, is also a director. Fares has four sisters.

In 1987, when Fares was 14, his family moved to Sweden. They settled in a town called Örebro. They moved to Sweden to escape the Lebanese Civil War. They chose Sweden because they had relatives already living there. Fares shared that he learned Swedish very quickly, in just three months.

When he was 15, Fares started acting in a local theater group in Örebro. At 19, he went to drama school in Mölnlycke, near Gothenburg, Sweden. He spent six years working with the Theatre Tamauer group.

Fares Fares' Acting Career

Fares Fares has had a busy career in movies and TV shows. He has worked with his brother, Josef Fares, on many projects. He is also known for his roles in big Hollywood films.

Movies

Fares started his movie career in films directed by his brother, Josef Fares. His first movie was Jalla! Jalla! in 2000. He also starred in Kopps in 2003. Later, he appeared in Bang Bang Orangutang (2005) and Kill Your Darlings (2006).

In 2010, Fares starred in the Swedish crime movie Easy Money. He acted alongside Joel Kinnaman. This movie was very popular and was released in America.

Fares made his first Hollywood movie in 2012. It was called Safe House and starred Denzel Washington. He also played a CIA officer named Hakim in Zero Dark Thirty (2012). Fares had a role in Child 44 (2014) with famous actors Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman. In 2016, Fares played Senator Vaspar in the Star Wars movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

For the movie The Keeper of Lost Causes (2013), Fares learned to speak Danish in just two months. This movie was very successful in Denmark. It was based on a book by Jussi Adler-Olsen. Fares and Nikolaj Lie Kaas starred in the first four movies of this series.

Fares often works with director Tarik Saleh. They have made several movies together. These include The Nile Hilton Incident (2017), Boy from Heaven (2022), and Eagles of the Republic (2025). These films explore political issues in Egypt. Fares also had smaller roles in Saleh's other films, like The Contractor (2022) and Metropia (2009).

In 2020, Fares started producing with the miniseries Partisan. In 2023, he directed his first movie, A Day and a Half, for Netflix. This movie was inspired by a true story.

From 2014 to 2016, Fares played Fauzi Nadal in the TV show Tyrant. This show was on the FX Network. In 2018 and 2019, Fares appeared in two HBO series. These were Westworld and Chernobyl.

In 2021, Fares started playing the character Ishamael in The Wheel of Time. He continued this role in 2023 and 2025. In 2024, he had a role as Ruggiero in the Netflix series The Decameron.

  • He appeared in two music videos for the singer Lykke Li. These were for her 2011 song "I Follow Rivers" and her 2014 album teaser "I Never Learn".
