Discovering Farmington's Past
Farmington has a rich history, especially from the early days of Oregon. Many pioneers settled here, shaping the community we see today.
Early Settlers and Names
In 1845, pioneers Sarah and Philip Harris arrived in Oregon. They came through a route called the Meek Cutoff. They helped start an early Christian Church in Farmington. At that time, the area was known as "Bridgeport." People were baptized right in the Tualatin River.
Ferries, Bridges, and Post Offices
Philip Harris started a ferry service across the Tualatin River. This ferry became famous as the Harris-Landess Ferry. Later, he built a bridge in the same spot. Today, a modern bridge there is named in his honor. In 1851, a post office opened here called Harris Ferry. Philip Harris was the first postmaster.
The community likely got its name from Farmington, Connecticut. The Farmington post office was officially opened in 1884. It served the community until it closed in 1904.
Local Landmarks and Businesses
The building at the main crossroads is quite old. It dates back to the 1920s. For most of its history, it was a tavern. At one point, it even served as a store. Since March 2009, this historic building has been a restaurant.
Education and Notable People
Education has always been important in Farmington. The community has also been home to some important figures.
Farmington's School History
The old Farmington School is about a mile and a half northwest of the crossroads. It is on private property along Rood Bridge Road. This school was one of several one-room schools in the area. Another one was in Laurel. These small schools joined together in 1950. They formed the current Farmington View Elementary School. This school is part of the Hillsboro School District. Farmington View Elementary is about three miles northwest of Farmington on OR 219. The bell in front of Farmington View School originally came from the Laurel School.
