Farmville's Past: A Look at Its History

Farmville was officially started in February 1872. It got its name because most of the activities there were related to farming. Two important people who helped build Farmville were James Williams May and William Gray Lang.

James Williams May was one of the first town leaders. He gave land for churches. He also invested his time and money to help the town grow. William Gray Lang served on the town board for over 10 years. He also helped set up the tobacco market in Farmville.

The town grew slowly at first. In 1880, Farmville had 111 people. A nearby settlement called Marlborough had 79 people. Marlborough is now part of Farmville.

Growing Tobacco became popular in Pitt County in the 1890s. This helped bring the East Carolina Railway to Farmville in 1900. Many buildings in downtown Farmville were built soon after. This was because the railroad helped the town's economy boom. The Farmville Historic District and Benjamin May-Lewis House are important historical places. They are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
