Farwell is a small city located in Pope County, Minnesota, United States. According to the 2020 census, 56 people live there.

History of Farwell

Farwell was officially planned and mapped out in 1887. This process is called "platting." A post office opened in Farwell in 1887. It stayed open until 1998.

Since 1998, the city has had a special arrangement with the United States Post Office. The city pays the wages of the Post Mistress, but she is still an employee of the USPS.

How Farwell Got Its Name

When the Minneapolis and Pacific Railway (which later became the Soo Line) built its tracks through this area in 1886, they helped create new towns like Farwell. The railway company would survey the land, draw up maps, and sell lots for homes and businesses.

Important people involved in creating these towns included William D. Washburn, who was the president of the railway. Peter M. Dahl was a surveyor, and Charles D. Hammond managed real estate matters. These leaders were directly involved in naming the new towns and their streets.

Local stories sometimes say that the name "Farwell" came from a Swedish person. This person supposedly said "farval" or "farewell" as they left a meeting in frustration because a name couldn't be decided. This is a funny story, but it's probably not true.

The city was most likely named after Charles B. Farwell from Illinois. He was a political friend of William D. Washburn. They both served together in the U.S. House of Representatives and later in the U.S. Senate. This explanation was given by F. D. Underwood, a general manager for the Soo Line, years later. It's also interesting that Charles Hammond's wife's maiden name was Farwell. It's possible that when the town was being planned, Mr. Hammond noticed this and gave the name a double meaning. One of Charles Hammond's sons had the middle name Bertrand, which is also a street name in Farwell.
