Discovering Fate's History

The City of Fate has a very interesting name and past. People think the town was named after one of two important residents. These were William Lafayette Brown or GW Lafayette Peyton. Both were nicknamed "Fate" and lived in the area around the 1860s.

How Fate Got Its Name

Back then, owning land, having a post office, and the railroad were very important for naming towns. Fate was settled shortly after the Civil War. It was first located about 1.5 miles north of where Downtown Fate is today. Another town called Barnes grew where Fate's current downtown is. It was named after a doctor, Wiley Turner Barnes.

A post office opened in Fate on July 13, 1880. Harvey Peyton White was its first postmaster. As the area grew, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railroad was built in 1886. It ran through Barnes. This brought fast growth to the area. Fate and Barnes decided to combine into one town on February 11, 1887. This allowed everyone to use the post office and the railroad.

Growth and Challenges in Early Fate

In the late 1800s, Fate did very well. The town grew to have many businesses. There were four doctors, two cotton gins, and two grocery stores. It also had a barbershop, a butcher, and a candy shop. A grain elevator and a newspaper called The Fate Review also opened.

In the early 1900s, the town faced several tough times.

  • In 1906, a fire burned down the south side of the business area. There was no fire station nearby, so businesses were badly damaged.
  • In 1910, another fire destroyed the north side of town.
  • The Great Depression in the 1930s caused money problems for local farmers. Many lost their land.
  • In 1933, a tornado hit and damaged parts of the town.

As the population got smaller, the churches in Fate decided to join together. This brought people closer and formed a strong community.

Fate's Comeback and Modern Growth

By the 1940s, during World War II, Fate had lost all its mail routes. Its school became a one-teacher school. The railroad station was sold. By 1950, only about 150 people lived there. Fate's school closed, and students went to schools in nearby Royse City or Rockwall.

However, residents used wood from the old school to build a Community Center. This center is still used today and was recently updated. After the 1960s, Fate finally started to grow again.

  • In the 1970s, a neighborhood called Woodcreek began to be built.
  • In the 1980s, new technology like telephones and the 911 system helped the town grow more.
  • By the 1990s, Fate's population reached 475. It had a grocery store, an upholstery shop, a printer, and restaurants.

New neighborhoods and developments continued to make Fate's population boom in the early 2000s. In 2000, Fate had just over 600 people. Now, in 2022, the population is estimated to be almost 23,000.
