Fayón (also called Faió) is a small town in Spain. It is located in the province of Zaragoza, which is part of the Aragon region.

Fayón sits right between two important rivers: the Ebro and the Matarranya. People in Fayón speak a special kind of Catalan language. In 2018, about 354 people lived there.

History of Fayón

Where Fayón Belongs

For a long time, Fayón was considered part of an area called the Matarranya. Today, it is officially part of a different area known as Bajo Aragón-Caspe/Baix Aragó-Casp.

The Battle of the Ebro

A very important event in Spanish history happened near Fayón. This was during the Spanish Civil War. On July 25, 1938, a big battle called the Battle of the Ebro took place. Some of the toughest fights happened in an area called the Auts, about 8 kilometers north of Fayón.

During this battle, soldiers from the Republican Army crossed the Ebro River. They tried to advance but were surrounded by the opposing forces. Many soldiers lost their lives in these hills.

The Village Under Water

Something very unusual happened to the original village of Fayón. In 1967, the old town was completely covered by water! This happened because a large dam, called the Riba-roja Reservoir, was built. The dam created a big lake, and the old village ended up at the bottom of it.

After this, a new village of Fayón was built for the people to live in. It was constructed by a company called ENHER, which built the dam.

Changes in Population

Fayón used to have coal mines nearby. Many people worked in these mines. But when the mines closed, many people moved away to find new jobs. Because of this, Fayón has lost about half of its population over time.
