Faya-Largeau is the largest city in northern Chad, a country in Africa. It is also known simply as Faya. The city is located in the Borkou Region. This region was created in 2008. Before that, Faya-Largeau was part of a larger area called Bourkou-Ennedi-Tibesti.

History of Faya-Largeau
The city was first known as Faya. Later, it was renamed Largeau to honor a French colonel named Victor Emmanuel Largeau. When Chad became an independent country from France, the city's name changed again to Faya-Largeau.
The city has seen some conflicts. In 1975, Libya took control of Faya-Largeau. But in 1980, forces led by Hissène Habré took it back. Libya captured the city again in 1983. However, they left in 1987 during a conflict known as the Toyota War.
Economy and Daily Life
Faya-Largeau has a good supply of underground water. This helps the city's economy. The main activities here are agriculture (farming) and natron mining. Natron is a natural salt used for many things.
The city has an airport called Faya-Largeau Airport. It has a paved runway. This airport is mostly used by military airplanes.

Climate and Weather
Faya-Largeau has a very hot desert climate. This is typical for the Borkou Region, which is in the middle of the Sahara Desert.
The summers are extremely hot. From April to September, the average highest temperatures are usually over 39 °C (102.2 °F). In June, it can reach about 42.1 °C (107.8 °F). The coolest months are December and January. Even then, the average highest temperature is around 26.4 °C (79.5 °F).
There is very little rain in Faya-Largeau. On average, only about 11.7 millimetres (0.46 in) of rain falls each year. Most of this rain happens between June and September. Some years, there is no rain at all. The city also gets a lot of sunshine, about 3,800 hours every year.
