The Federation of the Emirates of the South (Arabic: اتحاد إمارات الجنوب العربي Ittiḥād ʾImārāt al-Janūb al-ʿArabiyy) was a group of small states. These states were part of the British Empire in a region called the Aden Protectorate. Today, this area is part of South Yemen.
The Federation started on February 11, 1959, with six states. They signed an agreement with Britain. This agreement, called a "Treaty of Friendship and Protection," meant Britain would help them with money and military support. Later, nine more states joined. On April 4, 1962, the group changed its name to the Federation of South Arabia. The Colony of Aden also joined this new federation on January 18, 1963.
