Félix-Raymond-Marie Rouleau (April 6, 1866 – May 30, 1931) was an important Canadian leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He was a Cardinal and a member of the Dominican Order. From 1926 until his death, he served as the Archbishop of Quebec. He became a Cardinal in 1927.
Early Life and Studies
Félix Rouleau was born in L'Isle-Verte, Quebec, in 1866. He was one of eleven children. His father was a farmer.
From 1879 to 1885, Félix studied at the seminary in Rimouski. In 1886, he joined the Dominican Order, also known as the Dominicans. He took the religious name Raymond-Marie. He made his final vows in 1888.
He continued his studies in theology at a Dominican monastery in Corsica. He made his final vows there in 1891.
Becoming a Priest
On July 31, 1892, Raymond-Marie Rouleau was ordained as a priest. He returned to Canada in 1894.
He then worked at the Dominican training center in Saint-Hyacinthe. He taught and helped new members learn about the order. He also directed studies there until 1900.
From 1900 to 1909, Rouleau was the prior of the Dominican convent in Ottawa. He taught different subjects, including moral and pastoral theology. He also helped people with spiritual retreats.
In 1909, he attended an important meeting for the Catholic Church in Quebec. He also advised the Pope's representative in Canada. Rouleau spoke up for the Franco-Ontarian community. This community was facing rules that limited French teaching in Ontario schools. From 1919 to 1923, he was the leader of the Dominicans in Canada.
Becoming a Bishop and Cardinal
On March 9, 1923, Pope Pius XI chose Rouleau to be the second Bishop of Valleyfield. He officially became a bishop on May 22, 1923.
Later, on July 9, 1926, Rouleau was named the seventh Archbishop of Quebec. This was a very important role.
Pope Pius XI made him a Cardinal Priest on December 19, 1927. This meant he was one of the Pope's closest advisors. He was the third Canadian to become a Cardinal.
In 1930, he was in a car accident near Levis. He was hurt but recovered.
Cardinal Rouleau passed away on May 30, 1931, at the age of 65. He is buried at the Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec.
