Feodor II Borisovich Godunov (Russian: Фёдор II Борисович Годунов, romanized: Fyodor II Borisovich Godunov) was a young Tsar of all Russia. He was born in 1589 and died in 1605. His time as tsar was very short, lasting only from April to June 1605. This period was at the start of a difficult time in Russian history known as the Time of Troubles.
Early Life and Education
Feodor II was born in Moscow, the capital city of Russia. He was the son of Boris Godunov, who later became tsar. His mother was Maria Grigorievna Skuratova-Belskaya.
Feodor was a strong and healthy child. His father, Boris Godunov, loved him very much. Feodor received the best education available at that time. He learned a lot about how the government worked from a young age.
He often attended meetings of the council, which was like a government meeting. He also met with foreign ambassadors. This helped him learn about state affairs.
A Talented Young Man
Feodor was known for being very smart and talented, even when he was young. He created a detailed map of Russia. This map is still kept safe today.
Later, a mapmaker named Hessel Gerritsz in Amsterdam published Feodor's map in 1613. It was used and updated for many years, even until 1665.
Becoming Tsar
Feodor's father, Boris Godunov, died suddenly. After his father's death, the sixteen-year-old Feodor was declared the new tsar on April 13, 1605.
His father had tried to protect him by surrounding him with powerful friends. However, Feodor's short reign was full of danger and betrayal.
The End of His Reign
A person claiming to be the son of Ivan the Terrible appeared. This person was known as False Dmitry I. He wanted to take the throne.
On June 11, 1605, False Dmitry's messengers arrived in Moscow. They read letters in Red Square that called for Feodor's removal. A group of powerful noblemen, called boyars, did not want to support the new tsar. They took control of the Kremlin and arrested Feodor.
Feodor was killed in his apartment on June 10 or 20, along with his mother. It was officially said that he had been poisoned. However, some people believed he was killed in a struggle. Even though he was only 16, Feodor was known to be physically strong.
