Ferdinando Galli-Bibiena (born August 18, 1657 – died January 3, 1743) was a famous Italian Baroque-era architect, designer, and painter. His last name is sometimes spelled Galli da Bibiena or Bibbiena. He was known for his amazing stage designs and grand buildings.

Ferdinando's Early Life and Training

Ferdinando was born in Bologna, Italy, on August 18, 1657. His father, Giovanni Maria Galli, was also a painter. Ferdinando learned about painting from a teacher named Carlo Cignani. He also studied architecture with Giulio Trogli.

After his studies, Ferdinando started working for important families. He worked for the Duke of Parma and the powerful Farnese family in Piacenza. He worked for them for about 30 years! One of his main projects during this time was designing the garden and villa at Colorno. He also became very good at creating designs for the theatre.

Working for Royalty and New Ideas

In 1708, Ferdinando was asked to go to Barcelona. He helped create the decorations for the wedding of Charles VI, who would later become a very important emperor.

After Charles VI became emperor, Ferdinando moved to Vienna. There, he designed beautiful scenery and decorations for royal parties and opera shows. He changed how stage designs were usually made. Instead of having everything line up straight, he used diagonal lines. This made the stage look much deeper and more exciting!

Ferdinando returned to Bologna in 1716. The next year, he became a member of the Clementine Academy, which was a group for artists. In 1731, he built the royal theatre in Mantua. Sadly, this theatre burned down 50 years later.

Ferdinando also wrote several books about his work, including:

  • L'Architettura civile (published in 1711), which means "Civil Architecture."
  • Varie opere di prospettiva (published between 1703 and 1708), which means "Various Works of Perspective."

Ferdinando Galli-Bibiena lived a long life and passed away on January 3, 1743, when he was over 86 years old.

The Talented Galli-Bibiena Family

Ferdinando was part of a very famous family of artists called the Galli-Bibiena family. They got their name from Ferdinando's father, Giovanni Maria Galli, who was born in a town called Bibbiena near Florence, Italy.

Giovanni Maria learned painting from Francesco Albani. He started a tradition of art in his family that his children and grandchildren continued. Many of them became famous for designing amazing sets for the theatre. For example, Ferdinando's second son, Antonio, was also a well-known stage designer.

The Galli-Bibiena family used a very fancy style from the late Baroque period. Their theatre designs and other artworks were known for being incredibly detailed and grand. They made stages look huge and deep by using clever perspective tricks.

From about 1690 to 1787, eight members of the Bibiena family worked for royal courts all over Europe. They designed complex settings for operas, weddings, and even funerals. The Habsburg family, who were very powerful rulers, were some of their biggest supporters.
