Fernando Alejandre Martínez was born in 1956. He is a retired officer from the Spanish Army. He reached the highest rank, called General of the Army. From 2017 to 2020, he was the 10th Chief of the Defence Staff. This means he was the top military leader in Spain. After him, Air General Miguel Ángel Villarroya took over.

Fernando Alejandre Martínez's Military Journey

Fernando Alejandre Martínez was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1956. He joined the military and became a lieutenant in the engineers branch in 1979. He worked hard and was promoted to General of the Army in 2017.

Early Military Roles

He started his career in the Army's Parachute Engineers Battalion. He even led a company of paratroopers.

In 1991, he helped organize a Spanish team to send aid to northern Iraq. This was during the Gulf War. After that, he went back to the Parachute Brigade. He also taught tactics at the Army War School.

In 1994, he went abroad again. He led the engineers of a Spanish group sent to Bosnia and Herzegovina. This was a peacekeeping mission.

Rising Through the Ranks

As a lieutenant colonel, he worked as the chief of staff for the Army's Engineer Command. He also worked in the Army's main operations division. Later, he led the Operations Section of the Rapid Action Force Headquarters.

When he became a colonel, he commanded the Pontoneros Regiment and Engineers Specialties number 12 in Zaragoza. He also worked as a military advisor for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 2003, he directed the KFOR Joint Operations Center in Pristina. KFOR is a peacekeeping force in Kosovo.

High-Level Positions

In 2010, he was promoted to brigadier general. He became the head of the Operations Division for the Army's General Staff. Two years later, as a division general, he went to NATO headquarters in Europe. He served as the second chief of staff for resources there.

In 2015, he became a lieutenant general. He was sent to the Brunssum base in the Netherlands. There, he was the deputy head of the NATO Joint Forces Command. This was the highest NATO position held by a Spanish military officer at that time.

Top Military Leader

On March 24, 2017, he was chosen to be the Chief of the Defence Staff. This is the most important military job in Spain. He held this position until January 15, 2020.

After he retired from active service in February 2020, he joined the Royal and Military Order of Saint Hermenegild. In June 2021, he became the Vice President of the Ferrer-Dalmau Foundation.
