About Fernando Bolivar Galiano
In the 1980s, Fernando joined a nature group called ADENA-WWF in Granada, Spain. He helped run a camp for several years that was started by Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente. At the same time, he began studying Art and Biology at the University of Granada.
In 1991, he received a special scholarship. This allowed him to study how living things damage art at a top lab in Rome, Italy. There, he helped research how to restore famous places like the Coliseum and the Trevi Fountain.
After his research, he wrote the first Spanish thesis (a long research paper) about how living things harm cultural items. In 1994, he earned his doctorate degree. His research showed for the first time how tiny microalgae affect the Alhambra, a very famous monument in Spain.
Professor and Artist
Today, Fernando is an Arts professor at the University of Granada. He is specially trained to teach many subjects, including art, restoration, and biology.
He also works as a visual artist using the name Ferbo Ligali. He creates paintings, sculptures, and other art. His art often mixes science and artistic ideas.
Helping Children
Fernando was also a leader in protecting the rights of children whose parents were getting a divorce. He helped start an organization called DEHISE. Now, he is the president of another group that works for fairness and equality.
The Ligalismo Movement
He also started a new cultural movement called "Ligalismo." This movement combines art and science in a unique way.
Art and Science Together
Fernando Bolivar Galiano has always looked for ways to connect science and art. He wants to find scientific uses for art and artistic answers for science.
This idea of mixing art with science and other subjects is like the Renaissance period. It has been a key part of his work since he started. This helps him lead teams that need both art and science skills.
Protecting Monuments and Art
Fernando studies how to protect and restore monuments, paintings, and old fabrics. He has focused a lot on the Alhambra. He looks at how living things like bacteria, vascular plants, algae, fungi, insects, and even vertebrates can damage its fountains. He then figures out how to fix these problems.
Creating Artworks
His artistic creations include paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs.
Teaching Art and Restoration
Fernando started teaching in 1991. He taught basic art classes at the University of Granada. Later, he became the only teacher in Spain for restoring textiles (fabrics). He taught about what causes damage, how to save art, and how to display it. He also taught about painting techniques and how art connects with nature.
To help art students understand science, he created special courses. These included "Basic Biology applied to Artistic Techniques and Restoration" and "Bio-deterioration and Restoration: Organic Materials."
He also works on projects to make teaching easier and more modern. He helps adapt studies to new European education standards.
BIO-ARTE Classroom
Fernando is the director and founder of the BIO-ARTE class. This class is for artists in Granada who love nature. It has a special workshop for drawing and "Wildlife Art" in the Albayzin area. Here, he organizes many activities like field trips, painting contests, and student art shows.
He also arranges workshops at the Science Park, helps with book illustrations, and creates websites and DVDs. He teaches courses on painting and drawing nature. Since 2005, he has also been the director of the Music Classroom at the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts.
His Unique Art
Fernando had his first art show in 1989. Since then, he has shown his work in many exhibitions. His art has been featured in newspapers, on TV, and online. People see his ideas as new and important in both art and science.
His most famous works use live microalgae. He makes a special "algal paint" from tiny ground-up algae mixed with other materials. He also creates "living pictures" by growing microalgae between glass panes. These "living pictures" are solid artworks made of algae. They are framed between two pieces of glass, sometimes with small openings for air. They change in color and look as the tiny organisms grow.
He also makes special artworks that you can view with 3D glasses. He even designs custom chess sets.
The Cabinet as a Museum
Fernando's exhibition, "The strange Cabinet of Prof. Bolivar-Galiano," mixes science and art. This show brought back the old idea of cabinets as museums. Instead of showing his work in regular art galleries, he puts them in places that inspired them. For example, his "Art and Science" show was at the Faculty in Granada.
This creates a new kind of museum space. Fernando, using his artist name Ferbo Ligali, wants to go back to how things were displayed long ago. Before museums became separate (like natural history museums and art museums), they were called "Cabinets of Curiosities" or "Halls of Marvels." These places brought together all kinds of interesting things.
Fernando uses his experience to create the Ferbo Ligali Cabinet-Museum. It's a place in Granada where nature, beauty, and science come together. It hosts many cultural activities like talks, courses, workshops, and even concerts. It welcomes all kinds of art, science, and philosophy.
He recently set up a cabinet in the lobby of the Higher Royal Musical Conservatory's Auditorium in Granada. This was part of an exhibition called "Musik = Art = Science." It showed the artistic link between science and music.
