Fernando Fernández Gómez (born August 28, 1921 – died November 21, 2007), known as Fernando Fernán Gómez, was a famous Spanish actor, writer, and film director. He was also a member of the Royal Spanish Academy for seven years. He was born in Peru because his mother, Carola Fernán-Gómez, was an actress touring Latin America. He later used her last name as his stage name when he moved to Spain in 1924.

About Fernando Fernán Gómez's Life
Fernando Fernán Gómez was likely born in Lima, Peru, on August 28, 1921. His mother, Carola Fernán Gómez, was a theater actress touring South America. His birth certificate was issued later in Argentina, which is why it shows Buenos Aires as his birthplace. He held both Argentine and Spanish citizenship. His father was also an actor, Fernando Díaz de Mendoza y Guerrero.
After the Spanish Civil War, Fernando started studying law. However, he soon stopped to work in theater. In 1942, he began acting in movies but also kept performing in plays. He even started his own theater company. He won awards for directing and writing plays.
In the 1950s, he started directing movies. One of his famous films was El viaje a ninguna parte (Voyage to Nowhere). This movie explored small towns as important places in Spanish culture. He also directed the popular comedy La vida por delante (Life Ahead) in 1958, which later had a sequel.
Fernando Fernán Gómez won the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin International Film Festival twice. He won in 1977 for The Anchorite and again in 1985 for Stico. In 2005, he received the Honorary Golden Bear for his amazing career.
He was very busy acting and directing in the 1970s and 1980s. While the 1990s were a bit quieter, he had a strong comeback near the end of his life. He appeared in important films like Todo sobre mi madre, Plenilunio, and the hit La lengua de las mariposas.
Fernando married María Dolores Pradera in 1945, but they divorced in 1959. He later married Emma Cohen in 2000.
He passed away in Madrid on November 21, 2007, due to health problems. After his death, the Spanish government honored him with a special award. The mayor of Madrid also announced that a cultural center would be renamed the Fernando Fernán Gómez Theater in his memory.
