Fernando Fernández-Savater Martín (born 21 June 1947) is a Spanish philosopher, essayist (someone who writes essays), and author. He was born in the Basque city of San Sebastián.

Early Life and Career

Fernando Savater was a professor of Ethics (the study of moral principles) at the University of the Basque Country for more than ten years. Today, he is a Philosophy professor at the Complutense University of Madrid.

He has won many awards for his writing. His work covers many different topics. These include modern ethics, politics, movies, and literary studies. In 1990, Savater and writer Javier Pradera started a magazine called Claves de Razón Práctica. This name means "Keys for Practical Reason" in Spanish.

In November 2012, he received the important Octavio Paz Prize for Poetry and Essay. In the same year, he became the Editor in Chief of Claves de Razón Práctica. This started a new era for the well-known publication.

Political Involvement

Savater helped start a political party called Unión, Progreso y Democracia. This means "Union, Progress and Democracy" in Spanish. He worked with other well-known people like Rosa Díez and Mario Vargas Llosa. The party aimed to stand against different nationalist movements in Spanish politics.

He has also been very active in groups that work for peace in the Basque Country. These groups also stand against terrorism and Basque nationalism. Some of these groups include Movimiento por la Paz y la No Violencia (Movement for Peace and Non-Violence) and ¡Basta Ya! (Enough Already!).

Fernando Savater is also known for making philosophy easier to understand for everyone. He has been a TV host and a lecturer. He is also famous for his political activism (working to bring about political change).

He describes himself as an agnostic. This means he does not claim to know if God exists. He is also an anglophile, which means he loves English culture. Savater supports the ideas of the Age of Enlightenment. This was a time when people focused on reason, freedom, and progress. He follows the tradition of thinkers like Voltaire.
