Fernando Martín Zavala Lombardi was the Prime Minister of Peru from 2016 to 2017. He was also the Minister of Economy and Finance for a time. Before his political roles, he worked in the business world, including leading a large brewery. He was born in Tacna, Peru, on February 16, 1971.

Early Life and Education

Fernando Zavala was born in Tacna in 1971. His parents were José Zavala Rey de Castro and María Fedora Elisabeth Lombardi Oyarzu. His uncle, on his mother's side, is the well-known Peruvian filmmaker Francisco J. Lombardi.

After finishing high school in 1987, Zavala went to the University of the Pacific. He earned a degree in economics in 1993. Later, he completed two Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees. He got one from the University of Piura and another from the University of Birmingham.

Starting His Career

Zavala began his career in private companies. He worked as an assistant manager at Samtronics Peru. He was also the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Apoyo S.A., which is now Ipsos Perú S.A. In this role, he worked as a consultant and helped with surveys.

In 1995, Zavala became the CEO of Peru's National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI). This government agency helps protect fair competition and intellectual property, like inventions and creative works. He held this job until 2000. After that, he became a consultant for the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

Working in Government

In April 2002, Fernando Zavala was appointed Deputy Minister of Economy. This was part of the Ministry of Economy and Finance. He worked under Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, who was the Minister at the time. Zavala served in this role until August 2005.

Later, President Alejandro Toledo changed his team of ministers. Kuczynski became the Prime Minister of Peru. Zavala then took over Kuczynski's old job as Minister of Economy and Finance. He stayed in this role until July 2006, when President Toledo's term ended.

After leaving the government, Zavala went back to working in private companies. He joined Backus and Johnston, a large brewery, as Vice President of Strategy. After three years, he became the president of National Brewery – SABMiller Panamá. In 2013, he returned to Peru to become the president of Backus and Johnston. Zavala has also been a member of the boards of directors for several other companies. These include Interbank, Alicorp, Banco Falabella, and Enersur.

Peru's Prime Minister

On July 15, 2016, the newly elected President, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, chose Fernando Zavala to lead his group of ministers. This role is known as the Prime Minister of Peru. On July 18, Zavala was officially sworn into office. The ceremony took place at the Government Palace.

He served as Prime Minister until September 17, 2017. His time in office ended after a "vote of no confidence" from the Peruvian Congress. This vote meant that Congress no longer supported his team of ministers.

Before this, on June 23, 2017, Fernando Zavala also took on the role of Minister of Economy and Finance again. He replaced Alfredo Thorne in that position.
