Park History

Fernbrae Meadows is a fairly new park. It was created between 2015 and 2019. Before it became a park, this land was home to the Blairbeth Golf Course. That golf course had been open since 1956.

After the golf course closed, local people were asked for their ideas. They helped choose the name Fernbrae Meadows for the new park. The park is right next to another big green area called Cathkin Braes Country Park.

Long ago, in 1854, a writer named Hugh MacDonald visited this area. He wrote about how beautiful it was. He described gentle hills, green fields, and lots of trees. He also mentioned many birds singing happily.

People who study old sites have found interesting things nearby. There are signs of ancient burial mounds and stone piles called cairns. These show that people lived in this area a very long time ago.

Amazing Nature

Fernbrae Meadows is a great place to see different kinds of nature. When the park was made, new homes for plants and animals were created. These include wildflower meadows, woodland areas, and wetlands. There are also marshy grasslands.

These different areas help many types of plants and animals live here.

Grassland Plants

In the grassy areas, you can find many plants. Some common ones are Yorkshire fog and rough meadow-grass. You might also spot meadow foxtail and sweet vernal-grass.

Other interesting plants include bush vetch and meadow vetchling. Look out for common hogweed and broad-leaved dock. You might even see tiny field forget-me-nots and common sorrel. Bracken ferns also grow here.

Wetland Wonders

The wet parts of the park are home to special plants. You can find beautiful meadowsweet with its creamy flowers. There's also soft-rush and sharp-flowered Rush.

Other plants that love wet feet include marsh Thistle and common yellow sedge. You might see oval sedge and marsh-bedstraw. And in spring, bright yellow marsh marigolds add a splash of color.
