Fernelmont (pronounced "fair-nel-mon") is a town in Belgium. It is located in the Wallonia region, which is the French-speaking part of Belgium. Fernelmont is part of the province of Namur.

As of October 2018, about 8,000 people lived in Fernelmont. The town covers an area of about 65.6 square kilometers. This means there are about 122 people living in each square kilometer.

The municipality of Fernelmont is made up of ten smaller areas called districts. These districts are Bierwart, Cortil-Wodon, Forville, Franc-Waret, Hemptinne, Hingeon, Marchovelette, Noville-les-Bois, Pontillas, and Tillier.

Discovering Fernelmont's Past

Fernelmont became an official municipality on January 3, 1977. This happened when ten smaller towns joined together. The new municipality was named Fernelmont after a castle from the 13th century. This castle was located near the center of the new area.

It's interesting to know that none of the villages that form Fernelmont were ever called Fernelmont before. The main town hall, where the local government works, is in the district of Noville-les-Bois.

Fernelmont's Economy

Fernelmont has a special area for businesses called a "Zone d'Activités Économiques" (Z.A.E.). This is like a business park for small and medium-sized companies that don't cause pollution. It is located south of the village of Noville-les-Bois.

This business zone can be as large as 120 hectares (which is about 300 acres). By the end of 2010, over 100 businesses had moved into the zone. More than 800 people worked there, helping the local economy grow.
