The Co-Cathedral of Saint Julian (Galician: Concatedral de San Xiao; Spanish: Catedral de San Julian) is a beautiful and important Roman Catholic church. It is located in the town of Ferrol in Galicia, Spain. It is called a "co-cathedral" because it shares its special role with another main church, the Cathedral of Mondoñedo. Both churches belong to the Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol.

History of the Co-Cathedral

The building of this church began in 1763. It was designed by an architect named Julián Sánchez Bort. He got his ideas from a church in Rome called Sant'Andrea delle Fratte. The new church was built on the spot where an older, Romanesque style church once stood. The construction of the Co-Cathedral was finished in 1772.

In 1959, something very important happened. The church in Ferrol was made a co-cathedral. This decision came from Pope John XXIII through a special official document called a papal bull. From that time on, it shared its cathedral duties with the Cathedral of Mondoñedo.

What the Co-Cathedral Looks Like

Even though the Co-Cathedral of Saint Julian is mostly known for its Neoclassical style, it also has some older design ideas. Its main floor and early plans were inspired by the Renaissance period.

One interesting thing about this church is its shape. Most churches are built in the shape of a Latin cross, which is like a long cross. But the Co-Cathedral of Saint Julian has a Greek cross shape. This means all four arms of the cross are about the same length.

The church has a large cupola (a rounded roof or dome) covering its center. You can't see this big dome from the outside, which is quite unusual. Inside, there are smaller chapels along the sides. The main front of the church, called the façade, has two towers on either side. These towers also have cupolas on top. Some parts of the design show influences from a style called Mannerism.
