A Look Back in Time
The land around Fetters Hot Springs-Agua Caliente has a long history. The first people to live here were Indigenous peoples. They discovered and used the natural hot springs. These springs are what the area is named after.
In 1840, the Mexican government gave a large piece of land to Lazaro Piña. This land grant was called Rancho Agua Caliente. It was about 10 miles (16 km) long. In 1849, a man named Thaddeus M. Leavenworth bought 320 acres of this land. This area later became what we know today as Agua Caliente, Fetters Hot Springs, Boyes Hot Springs, and part of Maxwell Farm. By 1889, people were selling property here. They advertised it as being close to the "celebrated old Indian Medicine Spring."
The Fetters Hot Springs resort first opened in 1908. It was started by George and Emma Fetters. Later, around 1970, a famous restaurant owner named Juanita Musson opened a restaurant in the old Fetters hotel. Sadly, the hotel burned down five years later. The land was empty for almost 40 years. Then, in 2017, the Fetters Apartments were built. These apartments provide affordable housing for sixty families.
