The eastern part of Filbert Street, especially near Telegraph Hill, is mostly made up of cool walkways and step streets. You can't drive cars there! As you travel along Filbert Street, you'll pass through many interesting neighborhoods. These include North Waterfront, Telegraph Hill, North Beach, Russian Hill, Golden Gate Valley, and Cow Hollow.

Discover Filbert Street's Cool Spots

Levi's Plaza: A Walkway Wonderland

The very start of Filbert Street on the east side is a lovely walkway. It goes through a place called Levi's Plaza. This plaza was built between 1979 and 1981. Before that, this part of Filbert Street was actually a road where cars could drive! Now, it's a peaceful area for walking.

Filbert Steps: Climbing Telegraph Hill

The Filbert Steps are super famous! They are a special kind of street made of steps that climb up Telegraph Hill. Imagine walking up about 400 steps! Along the way, you'll see beautiful houses and public gardens. A drivable street called Montgomery Street crosses the steps, splitting them into an upper and lower part. At this crossing, you can find the `Malloch Building`. This building has a cool art deco style and was even in a movie called Dark Passage back in 1947. The Filbert Steps are just one of several step streets on Telegraph Hill.

Washington Square and Saints Peter and Paul Church

Between Stockton and Powell Streets, Filbert Street forms the northern edge of Washington Square. This is a nice park where you can relax. Right across the street from the park is the historic Saints Peter and Paul Church. This area is in the North Beach neighborhood. It used to be a big area for Italian-American families. You can still find many old Italian businesses here today. For example, Liguria Bakery has been making delicious focaccia bread since 1911! A block away, Victoria Pastry Company has been baking cakes and pastries since 1914.

Filbert Street's Steep Hill

Get ready for a thrill! On the west side of Leavenworth Street, Filbert Street has a super steep section. It has a slope of 31.5%! Because it's so steep, cars can only drive downhill (eastbound) on this half-block. Many people think this is the steepest street in San Francisco for cars. But actually, San Francisco has several even steeper streets! This block of Filbert Street is tied with a few others as the sixth steepest street in the city.

Old Vedanta Society Temple: A Unique Building

In the Cow Hollow area, at the corner of Filbert and Webster Streets, stands the Old Vedanta Society Temple. This building belongs to the Vedanta Society. It's special because it's the oldest Hindu temple in the entire United States! The temple has very unusual architecture. It looks like a Victorian house, but it has different towers with unique rooftops. These rooftops show off different building styles from around the world. You can see castle-like battlements, onion domes, and even styles inspired by temples in India.
