Filburt Shellbach is a main character from the cartoon Rocko's Modern Life. He is also in the comic book series of the same name. Filburt is a turtle who acts like a person. He often feels worried or negative about things.
His name is sometimes spelled "Filbert" and sometimes "Filburt." This depends on where you read it. For example, on the show's creator Joe Murray's website, it's "Filburt." In some episodes, he is called Mr. Filburt Turtle. However, his full name, Filburt Shellbach, was found in his diary. Mr. Lawrence provides Filburt's voice.
When Filburt feels uneasy or upset, he often says, "I'm nauseous! I'm nauseous!" He also sometimes says, "Oh boy" or "Oh fishsticks." He made popular the saying "Turn the page, wash your hands." This was a funny way to talk about comic books with ink that would stain your hands. Filburt turns 21 years old in the episode "Born to Spawn."
Who is Filburt?
Filburt is often described as a bit "nerdy" and very anxious. He has many phobias, which are strong fears. He was once a "genius" and a "star athlete." But he became worried after a crush that wasn't returned. The Nickelodeon website once said to "think of Woody Allen when you think of Filburt." This means he is a character who worries a lot.
His home island is called Kerplopitgoes Island. When he turned 21, he had to go back to the island for a while.
Filburt's Family and Jobs
Filburt is married to Paula Hutchison. They have four children: Gilbert, Shellbert, Norbert, and Missy. All four children came from the same egg. Gilbert and Shellbert look like Filburt. Missy looks like Paula. Norbert has Filburt's eyes but looks a bit like Heffer. Heffer helped take care of the egg because Filburt's shell was too hard. Norbert often thinks that Rocko is his dad.
Filburt has had more jobs than any other character in the series, with nine different ones! He has worked as a cashier at a grocery store and a comic book shop. He also checked licenses at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Other jobs include working at a movie theater, being a lounge singer, and selling Christmas trees. He has also been a photographer, a cook, and a food sample carrier.
In one episode, it was shown that Filburt supports himself by recycling many empty cans. He kept these cans in his trailer at the Patch o' Heaven Trailer Park. Rocko once said, "So this is why he never works." Records show that Filburt is 44% Dutch, 43% French, and 13% German.
Filburt's Running Gags
A "running gag" is a joke that appears many times in a show. For Filburt, one running gag is how many normal things make him feel sick. This is always followed by him saying, "I'm nauseous, I'm nauseous, I'm nauseous!" In one episode, "Sailing the Seven Z's," Rocko and Heffer even finish his sentence for him.
Another running gag is Filburt's constant bad luck. He often faces strange and unlucky events. This helps explain why he is so worried and often scared.
