Fincastle Resolutions facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Fincastle Resolutions were an important statement made on January 20, 1775. Fifteen elected leaders from Fincastle County, which was then part of the Virginia Colony, created this document. It was a key part of the political movement that led to the American Revolution. The resolutions were sent to Virginia's representatives at the First Continental Congress. They showed strong support for resisting the Intolerable Acts. These acts were unfair laws passed in 1774 by the British Parliament.

Why Were the Resolutions Created?

Other counties in Virginia had already passed similar statements in 1774, like the Fairfax Resolves. However, the Fincastle Resolutions were special. They were the first statement from the colonists that promised to fight to the death. This was to protect their political freedoms from the British Crown.

During 1774, the people who signed the Fincastle Resolutions were busy fighting in Dunmore's War. This was a conflict against the Shawnee people to the west. Because of this war, they couldn't formally share their feelings about the problems with the British government until January 1775. The Fincastle representatives reportedly agreed to the resolutions at a place called Lead Mines. This was the county seat, or main town, and is now known as Austinville, Virginia, in Wythe County, Virginia.

What Did the Resolutions Say?

The resolutions started by saying how much they loved and were loyal to King George III. They even said they were "willing to risk our lives in the service of his Majesty." This was to support the Protestant religion and the rights of his people.

However, the resolutions then explained their sadness. They felt the Intolerable Acts had harmed the good relationship between Britain and the American Colonies. They clearly stated that these violations of their constitutional rights were unacceptable.

How Do the Resolutions Fit In?

Historian Jim Glanville explains that the actions of the Fincastle committee were not alone. They should be seen alongside what other counties did, such as Augusta, Botetourt, and Pittsylvania. Each of these counties made statements. They all promised that the men who signed them would give their lives for American liberty. This shows that many colonists felt the same way about fighting for freedom.

The 15 people who reportedly signed the Fincastle Resolutions were:

  • Arthur Campbell
  • David Campbell
