The Finnery River (Irish: An Fhionnúraigh), also called the Boherbaun River, is a river in Kildare, Ireland. It flows through flat, low-lying land and adds its water to the River Barrow. This means the Finnery is a tributary of the River Barrow.
River's Name History
The name of the Finnery River has changed over many years. The earliest record of its name is Feneure, found in a survey from the 1650s.
In 1752, a map of County Kildare called it the River Fennery. The name Finnery first appeared in 1807. The river's Irish name, An Fhionnúraigh, might come from an old personal name, Finnabair.
Where the River Flows
The Finnery River begins in Hilltown, which is near Narraghmore. It flows towards the west through an area known as the Bog of Allen.
The river then goes under two main roads, the R418 and the R415. It also meets another stream called the Tully Stream. The Finnery River then flows through Boherbaun and Harristown. This is why it is sometimes called the Boherbaun River.
Further along, the Finnery reaches Cloney and Kilberry. Here, the river splits into two branches. The northern branch flows under the R427 road. It then joins the Barrow at Derryoughter West. The southern branch also flows into the Barrow near Kilberry.
Plants and Animals of the Finnery River
The Finnery River usually flows slowly. Its depth changes in different places. The riverbed is made of both mud and sand.
Along the riverbanks, there are many trees. These trees form a special area called riparian woodland. The soil near the river is often wet and rich in organic material like peat.
Many types of plants grow in and around the river.
- In the water, you might see fool's water cress (Apium nodiflorum), water starwort, and duckweed.
- Along the edges of the river, you can find plants like water dropwort (Oenanthe crocata), water mint, and clustered dock (Rumex conglomeratus).
- Other plants include soft rush, marsh-bedstraw (Galium palustre), and horsetails (Equisetum species).
- Common trees along the river include ash (Fraxinus excelsior), willows (Salix species), and silver birch (Betula pendula).
The main fish you are likely to find in the Finnery River are Brown trout (Salmo trutta) and salmon (Salmo salar).
