Building History

How 655 West Broadway Was Built

The construction of this huge building started in 2003. It took about two years to finish, opening its doors in 2005. This was a big deal because it was the first new office tower built in downtown San Diego in 12 years! The building is very large, with about 380,000 sq ft (35,300 m2) of space inside.

What's in a Name?

When the building was first finished, it was simply called Broadway 655. But buildings sometimes change their names, especially when new companies move in.

  • In 2007, a company called Advanced Equities signed a long lease. They decided to change the building's name to Advanced Equities Plaza.
  • A few years later, in 2011, a part of Advanced Equities became its own company called First Allied Securities.
  • Because of this change, the building's name changed again in 2012 to First Allied Plaza. First Allied Securities uses three floors of the building.
  • Today, the building is known by its address, 655 West Broadway.

Who Works There?

Many different companies and businesses have offices in 655 West Broadway. Besides First Allied, other companies like Deloitte Development LLC, Interlaced LLC, and the law firm Robbins Geller Rudman and Dowd have offices here.

Who Owns the Building?

Original Builders

The building was first built by a group called Broadway Tower 655, LLC. Robert V. Lankford helped manage this project.

Changing Hands

Over the years, the ownership of 655 West Broadway has changed a few times:

  • In 2007, a company from the Netherlands called Wereldhave USA bought the building. They paid $210 million for it.
  • Then, in 2013, Wereldhave sold the building to a company called Lone Star Funds. This company is based in Dallas. They bought it for $140.88 million.
  • Just one year later, in 2014, Lone Star Funds sold the building again. The new owner was 655 WB Operating, LLC, and they paid $156.8 million.
